Promotion of Mental Health and Integration of Refugees

Zusammenfassung der Studie

Refugees have a significantly increased risk of mental disorders due to traumatic experiences, social isolation, poverty, and discrimination. However, they are often underdiagnosed and, despite urgent need, often receive inadequate medical treatment. In addition to worsening existing conditions, deficiencies in mental health care also hinder their integration and participation in Swiss society. To provide particularly vulnerable subpopulations with access to adequate treatment options, the WHO developed Problem Management Plus (PM+), a peer-based, low-threshold, and resource-efficient treatment method aimed at reducing participants' stress levels and helping them better cope with everyday problems. The PM+ intervention has already been tested in several contexts (including Switzerland) for its feasibility and effectiveness. The BRIGHT research project is now examining the effects of PM+ on the mental health and integration of refugees.

Untersuchte Intervention

Problem Management Plus (PM+) is conducted by trained laypersons from the same cultural background and consists of five sessions with the following contents:

a) Problem-solving strategies

b) Stress management

c) Behavioral activation

d) Social support
