Walking Test without Oxygen Therapy versus with Oxygen Therapy
Summary description of the study
In the case of a lung disease, the 6-minute walking test is performed as a standard examination. This assesses physical performance. You are already familiar with this test from the usual visits to us in the pulmonology department at USZ. In this study, we investigate whether patients with lung diseases can walk as far with additional oxygen during the walking test (intervention 'Walking Test with Oxygen', ≥4 liters/minute) as they can without oxygen administration.
(BASEC)
Intervention under investigation
Walking test with and without nasal low-flow oxygen therapy.
(BASEC)
Disease under investigation
Lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary hypertension, or interstitial pneumonia
(BASEC)
- Minimum age 18 years - Written informed consent - Patients with diagnosed pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), distal chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with emphysema, COPD without emphysema, or interstitial lung disease - Previous desaturation under exertion, defined as SpO2 decrease >3% - Treatment with stable medication therapy (without changes for at least 14 days prior to screening) (BASEC)
Exclusion criteria
- Severe hypoxemia requiring additional oxygen therapy, defined as PaO2 < 6.9 kPa - Inability or contraindications to perform the investigated intervention - Inability to follow the study procedures, e.g., due to language problems, mental disorders, dementia, walking disabilities, etc. (BASEC)
