Study on the change of basal metabolic rate during fasting
Summary description of the study
During fasting, the energy expenditure of the human body is reduced. The extent of this adjustment varies significantly between different individuals. The aim of this research project is to investigate how this metabolic adjustment is regulated by the body. To this end, we will initially measure, as part of a preliminary study, how the so-called basal metabolic rate of the body responds to a short-term fast of 24 h. Those participants with a particularly pronounced reaction and those with a less pronounced reaction of the basal metabolic rate will be invited to the main study. This will be compared in a random order (24 h fasting vs. 8 h fasting) - how the basal metabolic rate of the body reacts to the reduced energy intake. - how energy expenditure increases after a test meal - what role particularly thyroid hormones play in this adjustment. Additionally, a sample of subcutaneous adipose tissue will be taken and examined to see how the regulation of metabolic processes occurs at the cellular level.
